What is Integrated Pest Management?

What is IPM?

Integrated Pest Management (IPM), coordinates the use of pest biology, environmental information, and available technology to prevent unacceptable levels of pest damage— using the most economical means while posing the least possible risk to people, property, resources, and the environment. IPM provides an effective strategy for managing pests in all arenas, from commercial production, to wild lands, to developed residential and public areas.

IPM at UMD

University of Maryland IPM Programs and projects are created and directed by Maryland Cooperative Extension and Maryland Agricultural Experiment Station faculty and staff. Representing the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and the College of Life Sciences, our extension and research faculty and staff network daily with the public and private sector to reinforce and extend the adoption of IPM approaches.

Citizens interested in IPM can get targeted information and specific advice from the Maryland Home and Garden Information Center.
